In each endeavor he specializes in history and science. He is interested in botany and considers mushrooms and other fungi among his specialties. Andrew has long had an interest in rural culture, including how Native Americans and early colonists foraged for their living in the forests and fields. A frequent speaker on these topics, Andrew is author of The Edible Landscape and Remembering Rockland columns which appeared in regional newspapers. Along the way, he has received many honors including a listing in Who's Who in Science and Engineering and receiving the Who's Who Lifetime Achievement Award which only 5% of their inductees are qualified for. He manages a business, Dutchway Publications and Environmental Consulting and lives in Stony Point, New York. Dr. Andrew J. Smith is a Retired, professor, lecturer and writer living in Stony Point, NY, USA.
Andrew J. Smith Ph.D. in archaeology, a post-doctoral D.Sc. in botany and mycology, Th.D. in theology, with his latest - and he swears his last academic effort - being a Doctor of Humanities (D. Hum.) in political science. But as an addendum to that, an opportunity arose in which he obtained another post-doctoral Litt. D. in Physical and Life Sciences and he put the finishing touches on that, completed in 2016. In that effort, Dr. Smith submitted a dissertation in which he posited his critique of the "Multiverse Theory" which the dean of the school loved and gave hims many kudos for his originality and depth of thought. Additionally, he has applied for another Masonic graduate fellowship scholarship for this project. He holds a M.S. in environmental science, and M.A. in history, a B.S. in earth and life sciences and a B.A. in integrated social sciences. He has studied German at Berlitz and uses it often. Dr. Smith has received Masonic graduate and post graduate scholarships on six occasions. He was formerly a member of Mensa (IQ 181) but allowed his membership to lapse because of his great disappointment to find that the organization was not designed to direct, cultivate, and invest all their brainpower toward the improvement of the human condition and the advancement knowledge but instead it was merely just another social club with a particularly snobbish and self-indulgent disposition. The Dr. was a professor of history and sciences at Mount St. Mary College, and a professor of history and science at SUNY Empire State College, and he has also taught these subjects at Rockland Community College. He has been an adult education instructor at the North Rockland Adult Education Institute since 1989 in history, nature studies and conducts field research exercises with them too. For twelve years he has been a home instructor in social studies and all sciences at the Mahwah, N.J. Board of Education, specializing in home instruction with students who are too sick to attend school. Dr. Smith was senior district forest ranger and co-founder of the underwater investigation unit for the New York State Park Police, museum curator and interpreter for the New York State Parks system for 27 years in the Palisades region at Trailside Museums and zoo and at the Perkins Memorial Tower Museum. While there he was awarded the title of "Curator of History and Mycology." The Dr. was a county planning board commissioner but let his term of office lapse as it was a do-nothing board and my position is that if I am to donate my time it had better be for something worthwhile and this wasn't it. Andrew was an environmental consultant for the town of Stony Point 1989 to 1992. Dr. Smith is currently conducting a popular lecture series entitled, "Science, Religion, and the Future" along with "Current Issues in Public and Social Policy" for the Dutch Reformed Church and hopes it will develop into a more widespread audience. He formerly wrote two weekly newspaper columns on history and science. Col. Smith was a regular commentator and technical advisor on the skype "Revolutiuon Radio" network "News to Me" program. The reverend is a past member of the Presidential Prayer team (2000 - 2008). The Dr. has conducted a hospice ministry for nearly 25 years and has seen several dear friends through to the their ends. Dr. Smith has been published many times with over 100 articles to his credit in history, botany, zoology, earth science, and technical subjects as published by the Trailside Museums, a subdivision of the New York State Museum. He published over 500 articles on the xomba.com blog site. He co-authored a paper which was presented before the National Food Chemists annual meeting in Boston, Massachussetts in 1998 (the subject was about the chemical analysis of an edible plant which theretofore had never been studied). Dr. Smith has penned several books: The Appalachian Chronicles: Rural American Philosophy and Folklore from Beelining to Back Porches, Exploring the Edible Landscape: Wild Foods Cookbook, The Hudson Valley Old Fashioned Recipes Cookbook, and Things That Shouldn't Be There (an exercise in zoology and mycology examining species which are occurring in the northeastern U.S. well outside of their normal ranges), Assault on Tradition, The Nickel and Dime Lifestyle: Recycling For Fun and Profit. The entire list of 60 books in print can be found at the bottom of this page in the section on books in print and where they can be purchased. He was the field and landscape archaeologist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and inter-agency liaison between the USACE and the N.Y.S. Dr. Smith served on Congressman Benjamin Gilman's NYS 20th Congressional District (who was the senior most member of congress at the time) advisory committees on the subjects of science and technology, the environment, labor, agriculture, and veteran's affairs. In his retirement for several years the Dr. has been a research participant at the Nathan Kline Institute where he has recorded scores of such an unusually high nature that his data has skewed several studies thus requiring reassignment into separate and special categories. He is a delegate to the New York State Republican convention and a member of the Rockland County Republican executive committee and has screened candidates for governor, United States Senator and Congress, County Executive, Attorney General, New York State Judgeships. Technical analyst and on-air correspondent for Oak Island documentary series.
His latest accomplishment and perhaps the one which has given him the most satisfaction of all, is that at the age of 56 he learned to downhill ski. He credits his natural contrariness and an obtuse and left-handed dare being the catalysts which caused him to move toward this gamble. Next stop cross country skiing.
Formerly was a scuba diver but turned in license when I hurt my ears in 1985 while on an investigation for the N.Y State Park Police in an over 100 foot-deep lake. While doing that, he was co-founder of the Underwater Investigation Unit at the Palisades Region of N.Y. State Park Police. The Dr. has also done mountain climbing, and rappelling on cliff and cavernous structures, in that capacity conducting cliff rescues of park visitors. He still has the equipment and training for that.
